“Feel like a VIP on this unique excursion”
Looking for an alternative to the cruise ship's excursions, I found La Citro Verde online and booked it before our cruise. I couln't have been happier with this choice. Jorge Naveas (lacitroverde@gmail.com) detailed everything in our many email exchanges, and he was waiting for us as we docked in Coquimbo (the city of La Serena is beside this port city). This was a very unique excursion, to say the least. In addition to the 1980 Citroën that we rode in, there were 5 more accompanying us in a caravan as we made our way to the Elqui Valley. My wife and I felt like VIPs on our way to the Puclaro Represa (dam), the town of Vicuña (with visit to the Gabriela Mistral Museum and House), lunch at the restaurant Comida y Jardín (loads of food), and a visit to the Capel pisquera. All along the route people stopped to watch this unusual caravan of vintage Citroën cars, they applauded, gave us thumbs up, took pictures, and SMILED broadly; we were the center of attention. This was definitely our best excursion, and well worth the modest price we paid compared to the ship excursions for this port. If you are in Coquimbo for a day or more, you must do this excursion. Contact Jorge in advance, and he'll make sure that you have a memorable day.

“La Citro Verde, a fun tour alternative to the large buses.”
We met our tour leader/driver, Jorge Naveas (lacitroverde@gmail.com) and his associate, Javiera Uribe as we walked through the Coquimbo cruise port gate. We had pre-booked online, and they were waiting with a sign with our names on it.
We hopped in the back seat of Jorge's nicely restored blue 4-door 1978 Citroen 2CV for our 7 hour tour of the beautiful Elqui desert river valley region of northern Chile.
Our first stop was El Faro (Lighthouse) in La Serena before heading East along the river valley. Next stop was the Puclaro Dam and beautiful reservoir. Traveling through many vineyards we arrived in the picturesque town of Vicuna, the birthplace of Literary Nobel Prize-winner Gabriela Mistral. Local sights included her museum/home, a beautiful main square, and the Bauer Tower.
The next stop was Pisquera Aba, a distillery for Pisco, the national drink of Chile...
that's what all of the grapes are used for !!! An interesting tour and free samples!
Also, an opportunity to purchase a quality product.
Nearby the distillery we had a splendid farm-to-table 4-course family-style lunch at the home of Irene Ramos.
Before our return to Coquimbo a stop was made for home-made sweet treats.
This was a wonderful private tour in a vintage vehicle, and a definite highlight in our 32 day cruise!!!

“La Citro Verde is the way to see Coquimbo, Chile” Linda Mason, Canada
IWell I just completed a voyage from San Diego, Ca. to Santiago, Chile and one of the stops along the way was Coquimbo, Chile. I had read so much about this area and I wanted to see as much as I possibly could in one day.
I read about a group called La Citro Verde who are owners of antique Citroen cars and how they are willing to take visitors on rural or urban tours. So I made contact with them. They arrived at the ship to pick me up and I was ready for a full day of adventure. There was another couple going along as well with their own driver and car. I was able to pick out the Citroen I liked the best and of course I chose the Canary yellow one with a great driver named Kelly.
Our first stop was to the fortress at the mouth of the harbour. This is presently under repair following a storm surge some years back following an earthquake which did major damage.
From there the caravan of four Citroens headed to Cruz del Tercer Milenio or the Third Millenium Cross Monument which is built on a hill 197 meters above sea level. The cross is 83 meters high and 40 meters wide. The construction began in 1999 and was completed in 2001.
It is to commemorate the birth of Christ 2000 years ago and has received a blessing from the Pope.
After our extensive tour to the arms of the cross we then returned to our cars and carried on. We visited a wonderful farmers' market where we were greeted with smiles and conversation. I was able to buy a few of the local products - special ointments for sprains and bruises and another special rub for colds.
From there we continued on through the city and no matter where we went we were greeted with waves from those walking along the streets, photos were taken of our caravan and smiles and cheers greeted us. It was like we were royalty and so much fun. The residents of Coquimbo enjoyed the caravan of Citroens as much as we did.
We were then taken to a wonderful restaurant for a four course lunch with homemade soup, appetizers, chicken for the main course and a great dessert.
From there we went on to a museum and then on to more shopping and sightseeing. It was a wonderful day to spend with La Citro Verde Club of Coquimbo.
They delivered us back to our ship about 45 minutes before sailing and we said our good byes....with hugs and handshakes.
I would highly recommend anyone going to Coquimbo to consider contacting the club which is on Facebook and making a date. You will love it...what a fun day and an experience I will probably never experience again.
So if you want to do something out of the ordinary - go for it. I am a 73 year old Canadian grandmother who had the time of her life. I now have a group of new friends in Coquimbo that I could call on anytime to pick me up at the pier or the airport. It was a fantastic day.
If anyone needs more information please do not hesitate to contact me through TripAdvisor.
I highly recommend this unusual excursion.

Fun Times ¡¡¡
We had the best time. We had a driver and a guide. There was 4 of us in the car. It was easy to hook up with them when we got off the ship. Our car had our names on it. Everyone was so warm and friendly. We had a great tour of the city, beach and their new Dam. As wee drove around people waved to us, took our pictures in the car. We were a caravan of three cars. Then we were treated to a wonderful lunch in a private home. It was so special. I would do this again.

“A day with Jorge Naveas Bravo”
We met Jorge at the pier and piled into his Citroen 2c. He asked us if we wanted to do the tourist thing or would prefer to see how the people live in Coquimbo. We quickly opted for the latter. But we did take in one tourist site--and got there before the herds of other tourists. This was the huge stature of Christ on the high point overlooking the harbor. From then on it was seeing how folks live in Coquimbo, going to a market to take in the exotic sights and smells, having lunch in a local restaurant with tasty local dishes and local beer, walking around narrow streets, savoring smoothies made with fresh tropical fruits and experiencing rush hour traffic on our way back to the ship.
Jorge is a very personable tour guide. One of the fun things about riding in the Citroen is that locals are impressed by these antique cars and wave and salute and make passengers feel like celebrities.
We highly recommend these tours to anyone who has the good fortune to spend a day in Coquimbo.
